Geographical Extension: from southeastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho across Nevada, Utah, southern California and western Arizona to Sonora (Mexico)
Habitat: desert to semi-arid desert, sandy but also rocky underground. Diurnal
Size: up to 9,5 cm, males are a bit smaller
Life Expectancy: 7-8 years
Reproduction: 2-16 eggs (average 7). Incubation period at 27-28°C approx. 45-55 days.
Temperature: air temperature between 30-38°C, local heat spots up to 45-50°C. Night setback to room temperature. Hibernation at 10-15°C.
Humidity: 30-50%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes, if necessary UV tubes (see "Sorry Link missing"). For sufficient UV radiation we recommend "Sorry Link missing" or "Sorry Link missing". "Sorry Link missing" for the creation of local heat spots. Species needs a strong illumination. If necessary the use of HQI lamps or T5 fluorescent tubes is recommended.
Substrate: loamy earth with rock structures or "Sorry Link missing" or grit. Also "Sorry Link missing".
Cage Furniture: hiding places, stones and roots, also climbing facilities and a flat water bowl. Cage substrate should always be slightly wet in one spot.
Terrarium Size (for long term care): 60x60x40 cm and larger
food: besides ants as their principal food they also eat medium house crickets and crickets, slaters, spiders, smaller moths and carpet moths.
Comment: Sozialisation is possible with Side blotched lizards and desert iguanas in accordingly sized terrariums.
