Geographical Extension: Large parts of USA and Canada
Habitat: Near bodies of water, in marsh areas, marshes and moist forests. Diurnal
Size: approx. 50-70 cm females up to 130 cm
Life Expectancy: over 10 years
Reproduction: viviparous, on average 30 young animals
Temperature: air temperature between 20-25°C at day, at night as low as under 20°C. Local sun spots up to 33°C.
Humidity: about 60-70%, dry spots are essential
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes e.g. "Sorry Link missing" or "Sorry Link missing"
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate (see "Sorry Link missing").
Cage Furniture: large water bowl, possibly an aqua-terrarium. Climbing facilities, gravel, hiding places.
Terrarium Size (for long term care): Minimum requirement 1.25x0.75x0.5 (LxWxH) of the overall length of the animal for one pair. At least 100x50x50 are recommended.
food: small fish, earthworms, slugs and on rare occasions freshly born mice
Comment: Several of them can be tended together without problems
